Yeah the possible explanations are quite interesting. The most popular theory, the one with "light subtraction", helped me try and switch the colors by having me ignore the light sources as much as possible.
When people say they looked at the altered version and then look back at the original, they now see it in the same color, but with me I still see the original as gold and white.

Stop there is no freakin way it's white!! It's proven to be Black and Blue
"lol i literally had to open up photoshop and use my color correcting skills i learned in photography to figure it out but yea that dress is blue and black, the white spot in the corner makes ppl who have a yellow color bias (like my self) think that its white and gold bc the lighting makes the black look yellow and thus we assume the lighter part has to be a white dress that has a blue cast. this happens when pictures are over exposed, with the proper exposure (or close to proper the lights will stil be blown out as this was shot wit a phone camera) u can see the dress is black n blue. "
Altered does look black and blue, but I still see the original as gold and white
