There's a button next to the stats on your profile that looks like 3 little people. You can change your main through there
How do you change your main?
If you change mains and try you still need to wait the 8 hours due to a glitch that tells you your old main is linked to your computer. There's no way around it other than changing your main, logging out, unplugging your router, waiting a bit, then plugging it back in and logging in with your new main.

I don't even think it's possible to sign into a linked ALT account anyways

No, you log into your main only. Then you click the arrow on the top right corner (next to your PM's) to switch
