Introducing Main Lobby

over 10 years

Dear EpicMafia,

It is my pleasure to announce the dawn of a new era on EpicMafia - the return to a single moderated ranked lobby.

This move was made due to declining activity in Comp Lobby, interest generated from Training Lobby's stint with a competition, as well as belief that the two communities can coexist peacefully and learn from each other. We strongly believe tables will fill faster and people will be encouraged to play different styles of games.

Comp Lobby has been de-stickied and the competition there will run as normal until the end of the round. Upon it's end, Main Lobby (formerly Training) will have its competition unpaused. The winners of the previous training round and this current comp round will select all the setups to celebrate the convergence of Training and Comp.

We will also be adding many new roles to Main Lobby for your enjoyment.

There is currently a 1500 point limit to enter the competition. Currently, you can only enter the competition on accounts you own with over the minimum threshold. If this changes (the condition or point requirement), we will announce it.

Please take a note at all the new threads in the new Main Lobby forums and familiarize yourself with existing site rules and policy.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to post here or contact myself or any of the mods.

Thanks again, I'm looking forward to this new era of EM with you all.

Bront

I responded to you on the other thread number. Basically, comp shouldn't be getting more "noobs". It will get more activity overall, but the point requirement being there still screens out people

The important question being: will there be a filer for ranked/unranked/comp games (or similar filter)?

This will be brought up and discussed.

numberwang - I'll try to address all of your points as quickly as I can before I step out for the next 12+ hours.

Comp was too slow and was shrinking, games were taking too long to fill. The reason we only merge Comp/Training is because they were together once, but split. The problems that lead to their split have been mitigated thanks to moderation.

Games/Survivor are two very different things. Games is meant to play mini-games, Survivor is for Survivor, which is a smaller community already - However, they are a niche and deserve that. Comp and Training aren't all that different.

The competition hearts will essentially be Comp Lobby, just in one place to encourage more activity and get new interest. Ultimately, it will be similar although now you can access everything ranked in one place.

@Jaleb, no, the system doesn't work like that.

As far as point requirements go, I'm talking to Lucid about it. Right now I'm under the impression you need 1500 points in Main Lobby to be able to join it. Linked alts below 1500 are ineligible to join, so you need to be over that threshold too.

I'll ask him about a stat merge with Comp, not sure how feasible it is though.

I have a question lol. What's going to happen to the piechart for competitive... will it merge with training/why can't I join the training round.

If we are going to combine to one lobby, and kick comp before the round finishes. Can we just restart the round in here?

Lol I can't join competition with my 70k+ points.
Also, who was the idiot who thought that training and competitive players are different? They are the same, just competitive players think they are better because they never have to deal with new players (which is way harder)

I'm new here so you might know better than me but I disagree. From my limited experience (only about 30+ games in comp lobby) there were far fewer straight up new players (for obvious reasons) and there were less kind-of-new-but-still-bad type of players in the comp lobby. There were definitely still new people and players that didn't know setups and were 'noobs' in that respect, but I think if someone did research they'd find that the noob/low experience count higher in the training lobby than the comp lobby.

And I do think comp lobby play was generally better because there were no true noobs in the games but that's just me. Is it wrong to want to play games with players who are more experienced? I personally think that's a choice we should be allowed to make ourselves as a community, unless the comp lobby was somehow a detriment to the site in some way.

cont'd

And if the argument is that the two can coexist peacefully, then why should they be forced to coexist peacefully? The preference some players had for comp lobby was probably listed above, and although I personally can live without the different setups and more experienced players why should that freedom to choose between the two unique lobbies be taken away?

And as for lack of activity; survivor and games lobby are both far less active compared to the now main lobby. Why not merge them? Why not make the lobbies into a single lobby for mafia games and single lobby for other types of games? What benefit does merging one lobby have that would not be multiplied by merging more than one lobby?

Feel free to pm me an answer, I've just been thrown off by the closing of a lobby that I was starting to prefer to the training lobby. Fmpov the games were really more competitive and higher quality and it seems silly to slight the users of that lobby by not allowing them to play the higher quality games if the only price to be paid was a longer wait time with a less active lobby, a price they chose to pay themselves.

I didn't realize there was a 2000 character limit, lol.

I'm relatively new here so I either missed the whole discussion about comp lobby closing or there never was one, so I have a couple of issues.

So why did the comp lobby have to be shut down? So what if more people used the training lobby? There are lots more new players in the training lobby, and the competitive lobby had far fewer noobs and far fewer vegs (at least it felt like there were less vegs). I guess the point of my question is, unless it provides some sort of benefit to the site as a whole in terms of performance or balance or anything like that, unless there is some greater good, is there a good argument for it to be shut down?

If the tables filled slowly in the comp lobby, isn't that a consequence of the choice the players make? I'd played some comp lobby (only about 30 games, I'm new here) but there is a definite difference in the players in general. The comp lobby played slightly different, more interesting setups, they were generally more experienced (and more than a few seemed to know each other) and the games were generally higher quality as a result. That's a conscious decision I'd make (and I imagine just about everyone who played there regularly understood that they were going to have longer waiting times). That seems a poor argument for closing the lobby as a whole, because if players want to wait and play higher quality games with (generally) more experienced opponents, shouldn't they at least have the option to do so? Why should that choice be taken from them if it serves no greater purpose?

I was here before the merge and dealt with new players consistently.

&&&& Yeah, there's no way that I'm going to be able to recover the amount of points that I've made in competitive, so are we going to merge (which seems like the only/best idea) the piecharts/statistics?
