Jade's Role Review

Hello, fellow EMers! This week, I have decided to review the Graverobber! This role was created by itg321 and currently has 264 likes!

The Graverobber is sided with the mafia, but doesn't participate in the nightly maf meetings. Each night, the Graverobber will have his/her own meeting in which he/she will choose one dead person's grave to dig up. The Graverobber will steal any item that the dead person may have. He/she will also get any reports that the dead person may have gotten. Graverobber is informed of the dead person's role, as well, with a message stating "While rifling through [player]'s belongings, you discovered that [player] was a [role]."

In my personal opinion, this seems like a decent role. It has a lot of power, so I'd be nervous to see it in a ranked game unless you create a setup that includes enough town roles to balance it out. It's basically like Janitor combined with Thief. Graverobber would be great on a no reveal setup! What do you guys think? Check out more information at http://www.epicmafia.com/role/999!

TriAft's Comp Lobby Review

Another week, another round. It’s time for Round 85, which has some great setups and some…not so great setups.

Setups chosen by Eloquence:

http://www.epicmafia.com/setup/8923

Manhunt

This setup is known for being a borderline pointfarm with its high capability of luck and the high point payoffs for every role involved. The game centers around the D1 NL, giving the N2 the ability to cause 4 deaths, one from mafia, one from killer, one from vig, one from jailer. The fact that all three town prs or all mafia could be dead after the first night based solely on the fact of choosing (to an extent) randomly gives this setup its luck-based nature. Sure, there are some mechanics which give a bit of scumhunting like the duel anon-reports to killer and the pleading for your life in jail, but with so many possible strategies it is almost impossible to have the exact same situation happen twice. The fact that this setup is such a clusterfuck and a high point payoff gives its allure to some players, while in this round, most runners are flocking to a more stable setup.

http://www.epicmafia.com/setup/494216

Gingie Needs a Lawyer

This setup just doesn’t seem fair for the town. It’s basically scumhunting with a ML as the Gov is a silent clear, he can’t out or he’ll die. Town on D1 has nothing to go on and has to figure out how to lead a lynch, with maybe Gov making the final call and wasting his OT. But the two town PRs in this really don’t seem to off put the Mafia. Sure a Dreamer report can be useful, but the guilty reports really don’t mean anything and there can only be two reports in the entire game. All lynching mafia D1 assures town of if that no PRs can be cc’d. This setup is extremely scumsided, as the stats (while a small sample size) point out. It’s an interesting concept, but it needs something more to make it feel like an actual setup and less of just talking in a chatroom for 10 minutes (especially that mafia don’t know their partners).

Setups chosen by wasteland:

http://www.epicmafia.com/setup/561586

Armed and Dangerous

Ah, Armed and Dangerous. The overplayed, often run on, simple strategy setup of this generation. This setup is at a point where there are a handful of strategies that are often used, while most other experimentation is ruled out. No one hits BP. No one CC’s BP. No one funguns (well, not usually). The art of this setup is that at all points in the game it gives either a clear or a CC (with a clear). The fact that people can just ride on other peoples’ success or failure gives a large appeal to lots of players. The highpoint payout, with 70 points for a town win, draws a lot of people in, especially those that are running. Players can play off other’s strengths and weaknesses and off of the mechanics in the game. Hooker, lawyer, guilties, they all give a smidge of doubt that all players can ride off of. There is always a win for both sides to win at any point, something for town to hope for. When a setup allows a win to go to either way based solely on the play of a clear, it’s debatable whether or not it’s a good “competitive” setup. Personally, I find it fun, while over time it gets frustrating, but relying on other people is fun.

http://www.epicmafia.com/setup/563501

Great And Innovative

Another often played setup from its varied outcomes. As with most setups with a Cop, a ML, and an inno’d mafia, Cop really doesn’t matter in this setup. It’s just another role to be cc’d. But this setup is heavy on the cc’s, three town PRs, each with nothing to confirm them. The thing that strikes me odd about this setup is that it is one of the few that keeping a town PR alive is better than killing them at night. Sure, killing a cop removes the chance of guilties, but removes the possibility of beating him in a CC. Killing Bomb and Orc removes them from play, but can hurt the mafia in the process. Most of the gameplay revolves around the N1 picks and the first 20 seconds of D2 on who claims and when. I do enjoy this setup, but playing it too much can hurt player’s abilities to scumhunt independently. Personally, I would prefer adding another investigation role and removing Bomb/Orc for Town, but people seem to enjoy it as is.

Setups chosen by Riotkiller:

http://www.epicmafia.com/setup/138

SK vs. Mafia

One of the earliest setups on the site, even before Politics as Usual. This setup is quite an enjoyable experience as it actively generates clears through the kills in the night. The somewhat fast paced sense of the game and the ability for the game to swing either way all throughout is really appealing to myself and a lot of other players, but the sense that it can go fairly quickly and that anti-town roles can get a large point payoff makes people consider it a pointfarm. Personally, I believe it is a pointfarm as that’s all that people are actively doing in this setup, but it is fun nevertheless.

http://www.epicmafia.com/setup/455867

Back to Night School (B2NS)

A setup based mostly around scumhunting, which does a fairly good job at accomplishing that feat. The setup is a difficult one to say the least, with both of the mafia members able to effectively counter both of town’s PRs. It is a very good example of scumhunting though and as the title does state, it does teach players how to scumhunt. I would rather have a Watcher over a Doctor so he couldn’t be hooked to make it a bit more townsided, but the way the setup runs at the moment works for what it set out to accomplish.

This is a fine round with some great setups for the people who want to accomplish different things. The runners can play on their GAI, B2NS, A+D, while the more casual people can play SK v. M or Manhunt, and the people that have some odd attraction to the nothingness that is GNAL can do that too. I personally will have a ball playing this setup in a not tryhard fashion. Good luck to all runners! ^_^

Thanks to the submissions! Please note that some were put in the shoutouts section!

This week's winner is ark, one of the moderators on the site. Congratulations! In an interview previously conducted by Phantomatrix, here's what ark had to say for himself: Why did you join EM? Erm, well I found EM through another site, as I had seen it talked about a fair bit so decided to check it out. I also played the game in real life with a group of friends from time to time, but in a much less competitive way.

What inspired you to become a mod? I had always wanted to contribute to the site as a whole, past being a horrible player. xD So becoming a moderator seemed like a long shot but a good idea, so I decided to apply, and to my surprise I got a response and here I am now 2 months later.

Does being a mod ever get in the way of having fun on EM? How so?/Why not? If anything it increased my enjoyment of the site, I have been playing a lot more recently and have got to know some great people through the position. It's never really gotten in the way before.

Who is Ark? Well ark is dazeldafreak and really I'm just an average player. Other than my full time job playing epicmafia, I'm at university studying music and not doing work, and that's about it really. Cat me in shot in the dark some time. C:

Also shoutouts to Tay and Lady. <3

Riddles found by SimplyJade

Two cannibals were chatting as they had their dinner. One complained that he really quite disliked his new mother-in-law. What was the advice given to him by his companion?

It is an insect and the first part of it's name is another insect. What is it? Think you can guess these riddles? Go ahead and take a stab in the comments!

Last week's answers, all found out by a shrewd Shmeur:

The third room. Lions that haven't eaten in three years are dead. That one was easy, right?

The woman was a photographer. She shot a picture of her husband, developed it, and hung it up to dry (shot; held under water; and hung).

Charcoal, as it is used in barbecuing.

Sure you can name three consecutive days, yesterday, today, and tomorrow!

The letter E, which is the most common letter used in the English language, does not appear even once in the paragraph. Here are some links to comics I found. Use whichever ones you want!

Super Bowl Special by bubbajack8

In case you missed it...

The Super Bowl, one of the biggest games in sports history. The equivalent of the Stanley Cup or The World Series. The 49ers recieved first, but went 3 and out. And punted the ball over to the Ravens. Baltimore has a 3rd down and 10 they make a pass for the Touchdown but it comes up incomplete. Thankfully for the Ravens the 49ers jumped offsides giving the Ravens another shot at the endzone. This time Flacco delivered with a TouchDown pass to Anquan Boldin. Score 7-0 The 49ers have a 2nd and 11 and Crabtree has a nice catch and run for 19 yards. 6 plays later Kapernick throws a beautiful pass to Vernon Davis streaking (and not the naked kind) inside the 10. 2nd and goal Kapernick is pressured throws it and it goes off of Crabtree's hands almost into the hands of Randy Moss. Niners have a third and goal. Kaepernick gets the ball and Paul Kruger comes up and sacks him for a 10 yard loss. The Niners have to settle for a field goal. Ravens have the ball, 3rd and 7. Flacco gets pressured and looks to be throwing it away but ANquan Boldin comes out of no where and catches the ball good for a first down. 3rd and 13 Flacco gets in trouble and is sacked by R. McDonald for -5 yards forcing the Ravens to punt. 2nd quarter now still 7-3. The 49ers have the ball just outside the Ravens redzone and hand it off to Michael James, who tries to fight to get back to the line but Courtney Upshaw creates a fumble and Jones recovers it. The second mistake by the Niners. Ravens have the ball. Ravens Play actian and a throw to Ed Dixon who juggles it but eventually catches it and comes down with it for 23 yards. 2 plays later Flacco throws to Dixon again and Dixon gets tackled by a facemask moving the Ravens to the 4 yard line. 2 plays later Flacco throws a 1 yard TD pass to Dennis Pitta. 14-3 Ravens. Next possession Colin Kapernick makes a mistake and throws an interception. The ball just sailed over the Wide Reciever he was throwing to and landed in Ed Reed's hands. Big fight making Baltimore and San Francisco have offsetting Personal Foul penalties. (Who said fights only happen in Hockey?) 4th and 9 the Ravens line up to kick a Field goal, BUT they snap it DIRECTLY to the kicker and Justin Tucker runs for 8 yards. Ravens force the 49ers to go 3 and out and get the ball back in good field position. 3rd and 10 Flacco throws to Jacoby Jones who has to dive for the ball to make the catch but no one touched him so he gets up and runs a TD. 21-3 Ravens. The 49ers answer by going down field and kicking a field goal before the half to make it 21-6. Halftime. Beyonce comes out and has a spectacular performance and a lil trippy one at the same time. Opening kick after halftime Jacoby Jones catches the ball 8 yards in his endzone and runs for 100 more yards and a Kick Return for a Touchdown. 28-6. The 49ers have the ball for 2 plays and then. Boom the half the lights go out. The game was delayed for a solid 35 minutes due to this. Some say the Ravens kick return sent a surge through the building, some say Beyonce's preformance was so good. Some say the Saints forgot to pay the light bill. The NFL said a outside force surged and they had to preform checks before bringing the lights back. Although the lights went out it brought new life to the Niners who came out and made some big plays to end with a Touchdown pass to Michael Crabtree (who was bumped by some Ravens but never went down.) 28-13. Ahmad Brooks brings the blitz on the Ravens and sacks Joe Flacco. The Ravens punt and the Niners return it all the way to the Ravens 20. Later Gore runs to the corner for a TouchDown. 28-20. Next Ravens possession Ray Rice fumbles the ball recovered by the Niners. Akers misses a 38 yard field goal but a flag was called for running into the kicker. Akers retries from 33 yards and makes it. 28-23. 3rd and 3 Flacco finds Boldin for 30 yards. Now there is 1 quarter left. 15 minutes to decide the winner of the Super Bowl. 3rd and goal Flacco gets in trouble finds time with his legs and throws it away. Ravens settle for a field goal. 31-23. 2nd and 7 at the 15 yard line Colin Kapernick sets a record for the longest QB run for a Touchdown. Down by 2 the Niners go for it but Kaepernick gets rushed and throws incomplete. Flacco goes out tries his hardest, gets down field, and the Ravens settle for 3 points. 34-29. Kaepernick throws to Crabtree getting down to the Ravens 40. Kaepernick hands the ball of and Gore runs for 33 yards setting the Niners inside the 7. The Niners fail 3 times to get into the endzone and it's forth down. Then the play the is controversial by both fans. Crabtree goes into the endzone to try to catch the ball initiates contact and the Ravens contact him as well. Should it have been pass interference? Maybe but they would have just offset. The Ravens get the ball. They go 3 and out. The punter sits in the endzone and just waits for the Niners to come get him. He burns 8 seconds and the Niners get the safety. 34-31. 4 seconds left. The Ravens have to kick to the Niners and as soon as the Niner player touches the ball the clock begins to tick. He runs as far as he can but can't quite get it and goes down, making the Baltimore Ravens Super Bowl champs. 34-31 final. Joe Flacco is the MVP of the game.

Link's Games Lobby News

It was a very eventful weekend for the Survivor Community! Some new, original, and ground breaking games were hosted with some very in depth gameplay displayed in all of them.

Here are the results to the three major games hosted:

1) Surfman’s “The Mole: Season 1” - It was a new type of survivor game based off the reality t.v. show. Surfman’s challenges in this and the setup in general, was brilliant. Kudos to the creativity and originality put into it. Link was the ‘Mole’ of the game, and put a unique and ironic character twist into it, by actually being completely obvious, therefore making the other players oblivious throughout the majority of the game. In the final stages, Bgeas15 and xMeow stood tall identifying Link as the Mole, and eliminating him. Leaving them as the final 2, however Bgeas15 was crowned the winner. Special note, Link caused the players to only earn a total of 8 points out of a possible 125.

2) Link’s “Big Brother: Season 29” - After over 9 hours.. BB29 finally concluded. The biggest twist in the game, not only came day 1, but also gave us a winner. Nikkinims sacrificed the ability to play in every HoH & PoV challenge until final four and having her vote revealed publicly every time, in order to win the first HoH. The first HoH was definitely worth it though, giving her 3 special powers, leading to her making some very big moves in the game. The final 3 were HighSpace, NickiJ, and Nikkinims. Nikkinims concluding her astounding game by winning the final HoH, which puts the icing on the cake, winning only 2 competitions the entire game, first and last HoH. Nikkinims took NickiJ to the final 2 with her, and then beat NickiJ in a 5-2 Jury Vote! Full results: http://www.epicmafia.com/topic/51803

3) Soda17 & Link’s “The Amazing Race: Season 1” - It was a very fun return of TAR! Although everyone was tired out from Link’s BB29, this TAR turned out to be a pleasant surprise! 20 players started, only 1 finished! Racing to each game with various passwords, was troubling and difficult, but R0ronoaZoro, Voice & HighSpace out lasted them all, making it to the final 3. In the end, R0ronoaZoro came out on top, becoming the winner of TAR Season 1! Here is the spreadsheet document of the full results: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AvZ4O5jSiODZdGh5bEdaQ1ExZng5dFVBU1RpOVVpQUE&usp=sharing#gid=0

Player of the Week: Nikkinims - For astounding gameplay displayed in Link's BB29!
