NHL thread of sorts

over 6 years

Year 2 of Anthony's crazy predictions this time I'll be more accurate hopefully but god how can you predict the central and metro those divisions are disgusting. What I'm going to do is basically say what I think the divisions will look like, what the playoff picture will look like (spoilers, Sharks win the cup) and then at the end have 8 teams I think are 100% making the playoffs, 7 teams I think have a 0% chance of making the playoffs, and then the top 8 bubble teams and bottom 8 bottom teams. I might have someone winning the division but being a bubble team purely because there are so many variables and even if I have them high up in the seeding, they could also just not make the playoffs. Okay that's enough talking this is my blog anyway here we go.

PAC:
1. EDM - Led by McJesus the only way this team doesn't make the playoffs is if him and Talbot both get injured.
2. ANA - They're aging but honestly they still have a killer defense and I can't see them missing the playoffs.
3. SJS - My boys. I'll spare the details but I think they have one of the best top 4 defensemen in the league, and their offense should be better this year. Last year was a fluke crosses fingers
4. CAL - Jagr is a flame lmao well Monahan/Jagr/Gaudreau is terrifying too bad their goalie situation is questionable at best. I don't think they nab a wildcard spot.
5. ARI - Arizona this high??? Yeah well they have some great prospects and I think they can actually make a push to the playoffs (and fall short).
6. LAK - Yes I have them under Arizona. Yes I truly believe that. They did nothing to fix their scoring (their only problem last year) and instead got rid of the backup goalie that carried them. I love that they suck.
7. VGK - Hey these guys will probably score, and one of their 90 defensemen will hopefully be an asset, plus Fleury in net? Yeah they're still gonna suck but not as bad as...
8. VAN - Worst team in the league. Worse than Colorado in my opinion. They have nothing going for them anymore. Have fun rebuilding.

CEN
1. DAL - Honestly I have Dallas winning the West, maybe the Presidents trophy. They got Hitch as a coach, fixed their goalie situation, and added to their blueline. That's a scary team.
2. NSH - Best top 4 defensemen in hockey. Scary good forwards. They will go as far as Rinne can take them. I think they could potentially take the division.
3. MIN - This team is super underrated. They have a solid goalie, solid forwards, and solid defensemen. While they don't have a "super star" they know how to win games.
4. CHI - Woah Chicago this low? Yeah this is one of those "I have them low but they're definitely making the playoffs" teams. They're just old and burnt out. Not much else to say.
5. STL - Last team to make the playoffs. That entirely depends on if Jake Allen can play goalie for 6 months. Otherwise Winnipeg will pass them up.
6. WPG - Poor Winnipeg. Wheeler/Laine/Scheifle is one of the best lines I can think of. But their goaltending sucks and they're in a brutal division.
7. COL - See ya later Duchene! Best thing Colorado can hope for is to get good prospects and win the draft lottery.

EDM beats CHI, SJS beats ANA then EDM, DAL beats STL (lmao), NSH beats MIN and then DAL but loses to SJS.

ATL:
TBL - These guys are way too good to not make the playoffs again. Between Kucherov/Hedmen/Stamkos they have no problem scoring. They win the east I think.
TOR - Yeah these guys are good. I think they're still a bubble team but honestly these guys are going to be good for the next 15 years at least.
BUF - Here's my "dark horse" pick or whatever. Buffalo had the number 1 power play last year and there's only going to be more penalties this year. Fix the defense and let Eichel carry them to victory.
MON - Not a whole lot going on besides Price which is honestly all you need. Weber is getting older, most of their forwards are pretty good but not fantastic.
OTT - This team is Erik Karlsson and only Erik Karlsson. Anderson is good their scoring is okay but the reason they went as far as they did was because of Karlsson.
BOS - They're on the downswing, and I don't think Rask is that good of a goalie. They also don't have the defense to back him up.
FLA - This team is...well I don't see anyone on that team and go "hey this guy can take them to the playoffs" everything is just kind of meh.
DET - How the mighty have fallen. RIP detroit and the worst team in the east .

MET
NYR - Look I thought they were on the downswing too but they have such a good blue line and somehow score a ton. These guys are good.
PIT - They haven't gained anyone that good, lost Fleury and Bonino, but they're still the defending cup champions with the undisputed best 1 2 centers in the league.
WSH - They lost so much but they still have 2 amazing centers plus Ovie who's going to make a comback this year since I didn't draft him in fantasy hockey.
CBJ - Last year I predicted them to be bottom of the league but god did they surprise me. Idk what they did but when Bob plays as hot as he did I guess anything is possible
CAR - The only thing stopping them from being in the playoffs is bad goaltending. Otherwise they're a great young team.
PHI - It's a crime to put them this low. But their goaltending is super questionable (there's a trend here) and their defense is mediocre. God can they score though.
NYI - Put them in the atlantic and they're probably a playoff team. They better hope Tavares signs though and they get an actual #1 goalie. Let's go Greiss.
NJD - Another team I hate putting so low but honestly I can't think of a team in the central they're better than. Great defense, Hishier + Hall might surprise everyone and score a lot but the metro is too brutal.

TBL beat CBJ, TOR beats BUF, who then lose to TBL (Sorry Marleau). NYR beat MON, WSH finally overcomes PIT, and WSH beats NYR and TBL to get to the cup finals and lose to the Sharks.

Definitely making the playoffs: EDM ANA NSH CHI PIT WSH NYR TBL
Top tier bubble (prob will make playoffs but might not): SJS MIN DAL STL MON TOR BUF CBJ
Bottom tier bubble (prob won't make plaayoffs but could): LAK CAL WPG BOS OTT CAR PHI NYI
Not making the playoffs: ARI VGK VAN COL DET FLA NJD

Okay that took took long but now I have this on record so I can brag later like how I said Edmonton would make the playoffs last year.

ya i'm a big dummy for thinking vegas wouldn't be good their first year how silly of me. but hey who cares how good they are because the sharks got out the brooms this year. i can't wait for nashville v Winnipeg that's gonna be such a fun series to watch also even though i picked toronto v washington for the east i think it's gonna be boston v Pittsburgh boston is looking menacing right now and pittsburgh just doesn't freaking die

sharks traded for a complete piece of shit who can score which is what they needed but god i hate evander kane. the lightning and rangers ruined my fantasy team by trading namistikov or whatever away and now i'm mad. vegas, the team supposed to be rebuilding, gave up their kidney as well as a few limbs to get....a second line forward from detroit????? how is this team good i don't get it this is why i'm not a hockey gm i guess. boston scored nash who i think will help them a lot. nashville didn't do as much as i thought they would but they traded with their biggest rival for a depth forward and i guess they really didn't need anyone else. scary teams rn: boston, vegas, tampa, nashville. i think those are the four best teams currently but washington/pittsburgh/philly/toronto/sj/anaheim/the rest of the central are all in the mix to do well you heard it here first

ya he's definitely having a good year and khuldobin or whatever isn't too shabby either. i almost forgot about this thread but shout out to edmonton for having the worst home penalty kill in history. also shout out to ottawa who got absolutely demolished by that trade deal and an even bigger shout out to colorado for ruining the trade market. the atlantic is a joke of a division rn aside from tampa/boston/toronto.

sharks are looking better i still think they need to fix their scoring. wish they could get as many calls as vegas does. also i realized the goalie interference rule is completely crystal clear now: you can't touch the goalie in a way that impedes him from making a save or gets him out of position unless you're sidney crosby. tampa is slowing down a bit but i think they're still the best team in the league, preds/blues are probably 2nd and 3rd tbh ottawa got screwed on that duchene trade lmao. edmonton must be furious that they didn't get a lottery chance last year so they're doing everything in their power to get one this year but they have to compete against arizona and buffalo who have the same mentality. meanwhile toronto has finally tightened up defense a bit, that or freddie is just a fortress. marleau could be 4th in all time game winning goals after this season and i don't think it's unrealistic to think he could be the all time leader before he retires

You ranked Ottawa criminally low, imo. And this is coming from a Leaf’s fan. Ottawa should get the third spot and maybe even fight with us for the second

yee on the last page i did my "after 10 games played" ranking which says i didn't give the sens enough credit and that it would probably go bolts -> leafs -> sens

Crazy trade. The preds went from having terrible center depth to having extremely good center depth. Not sure how much better Ottawa is or how duchene will do under Ottawa's system but we will see. Sakic got what he wanted holy crap that's a lot of assets. I think Ottawa overpaid for an upgrade on turris but hey if turris wasn't signing anyway I guess I get it. I would say the preds overpaid as well but they got exactly what they needed and they somehow grow offensive defensemen on trees so losing Girard or w.e isn't a huge deal and a second rounder is nothing for a top 2 center. In other news, sharks have the fewest allowed shots on goal per game let's go sharks

okay at least i'm looking decent in the atlantic if we ignore buffalo (get your shit together eichel). tampa/toronto are the teams to beat in this division. boston isn't playing well but they aren't playing bad, i think i didn't get the sens enough credit. detroit and florida are still the bottom two and top two are still tampa/toronto no matter what the standings say (imo) and boston/montreal/buffalo probably fight for that last playoff spot or two. and honestly montreal looks really bad. carey price is not playing good hockey. go buffalo

metro: what the hell is wrong with the rangers. who taught the devils how to win. where are the capitals. in all seriousness, the devils are actually looking really good. the rangers are looking terribly. forget the rangers winning the metro, scrap that idea i never said it. penguins are beat up pretty bad but still are the cup champs. washington should get better since it looks like holtby is playing better. nyi are playing pretty good hockey but i don't think it'll last long. flyers are a funny team, it seems like elliot only does well when his team is winning, and then he's lights out. maybe it's just me. canes look okay i still think they're better than the standings suggest. i have no idea what's going to happen in this division but i can't see the top 3 teams not being cjb/pit/wsh. everyone else legitimately has a shot at a playoff spot unless you're the rangers and you haven't replaced lundquivst
over 6 years
alright sharks have played 10 games so this is a good time to see how my predictions thus far have gone.

let's start with the pacific: whoops. my bottom 3 are the top 3. i really thought arizona would actually win a game by now but boy oh boy was i wrong. edmonton looks like they forgot how to play hockey, anaheim is probably going to do better now that they've patched up some injuries, and the sharks look awful minus couture. and labanc when he's on the top line. canucks should start losing soon because i still dislike them, kings might win the fucking division, and calgary should get better. vegas is the real mvp though good god they just don't ever feel like losing. i still think they even out, now i'd probably say final standings will be ana > lak > edm > sjs > cgy > vgk > ari > van but hey it's early.

in the central the blues are really hot, chicago lost to some bad teams, preds look like the cup final got to them, stars need really good goaltending to be good, colorado is winning?!!?!? jets were looking really good for a bit, i think hellybuck or whatever is a better starter than mason, and Minnesota looks in trouble. i think switching stl for min in my predictions is all i have to do. chicago might go higher idk yet but stl is probably going to be streaky since well jake allen is streaky.

they better, patty needs a cup. he will get in the hall of fame regardless and i'll argue with anyone who thinks otherwise

Okay well I guess I have to say Vegas is a good team now. Fleury is hurt, and their backup is now hurt, so they're using their third string goaltender. They still outshot and outscored the freaking Blackhawks. It's kind of hard to not say this team is for real anymore
