Epicmafia Mechanics

almost 7 years

Hi everyone!

Given the number of new users, I thought I'd make a post outlining some of the important mechanics that you'll need to know to use the site. If you have any questions, or you'd like anything added please feel free to post or PM me.

Joining a Game

Most survivor games are hosted at a 'first come, first served' basis. Just head into the lobby, and click 'join game' when something pops up. The exceptions to this rule will be jury games and reserved games. In the case of a jury game, you will generally be told that the game is for jury, and you should leave. Please do so, as the host will have created this for a specific number of people. In the case of a reserved game, there will generally be a game thread. Either post to reserve in the thread, or send the host a private message:

Game Mechanics

Whispering

Whispering is easily the most important function you will use in a game. It allows you to communicate privately with other players, and with the host. In survivor games, these whispers do not leak, so you can feel secure in your privacy.

To whisper someone, click the button beside the text box that says whisper:

Then select the person you would like to whisper:

Then simply type what you would like to whisper:

Make sure you click the whisper button again to type publicly once more.

Voting

When a player is voted out of the game, the host will request that you vote them on the side. Look at the list of players on the right side of the screen, and use the arrow to click the name of the person who has been voted out:

If the host requests that you NL or no lynch, simply click 'no one':

Kicking

Epicmafia is programmed to include a timer to keep the votes fast. This does not generally apply to games hosted in the survivor lobby, where the game modes rely on games taking a large amount of time. Regardless, you will see a pie at the top of the screen counting down. When this reaches the end, you will see several x's:

When a player votes, they are able to press an x to 'kick' the timer:

When all of the x's have been clicked, a 15 second countdown begins:

At the end of this timer, any player who has not voted is automatically kicked from the game, this referred to as "vegging", as they 'turn into a vegetable':

This often results in the game being remade, and a lot of rage directed at those who kicked (pressed the x's)

IT IS CONSIDERED EXTREMELY BAD ETIQUETTE TO KICK UNLESS IT IS UPON THE REQUEST OF THE HOST. PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS

Game Functions

In the bottom right corner of the screen, you will see a settings wheel which you can use to toggle functions.

I highly recommend toggling full screen to 'on'. This increases the size of the game in your browser, and can be extremely convenient for challenges like chutes (where the chute can occasionally go off the screen)

I would also recommend turning 'timestamp' on. This shows how long the game has been going, and at what time each comment was said. This is often used to measure how long people take in challenges, and whilst it seems pointless, this is a surprisingly useful feature of the website:

I would also recommend you turn vote log on. Whilst this function is more useful in 'main lobby' games, I still find it to be useful in survivor lobby. This shows you when a player votes for another player on the right, and allows you to keep track:

Hosting

Not passing the host

If you are ever hosting a game, you will have the ability to end the game or pass the host. You should not do this, unless you are giving the host to the person who won the game (as is often customary at the end of a game) or unless you are passing the host to someone. You will see this:

Click 'no' where it says End Game?

Click 'no one' where it says Pass Host to...

Spectating

Spectating allows those who are not in the game to view what is going on in the game. Typically, spectating should be turned off for all survivor lobby games. The only exceptions should be The Weakest Link games, and jury games. The reason for this is simple, people can see what whispers are occurring, and who is working with/against who. This allows for players to cheat, or for those who are not in the game to influence what is happening. To turn spectating off, always make sure this box is ticked at the top of your screen

If you notice that your host has forgotten this box, I would recommend that you tell them immediately. Some hosts will choose to go on based on an honesty policy, in which they continue on the proviso that no one looks at the game externally, however this is at the hosts discretion.

Little things

Name Tabbing

If you type the first two letters of a players username, and then press tab, it will automatically complete the name for you.
