Comp Lobby Change Proposals Part 2

over 10 years

Hello fellow players, after recent discussions in the original thread by Bumpers, we've come down to four solutions.

Check out the previous thread: https://epicmafia.com/topic/63209

Solution #1

Merge Competitive and Training lobby and rename it to "Main" or "Casual" lobby. Change the requirement to join the competition to 100 games played and 50% win ratio.

Solution #2

Disable the competition in Competitive lobby and move it to Training lobby for a trial period as suggested by Retti.

Solution #3 Rename Training lobby to "Beginner" lobby and Competitive lobby to "Advanced lobby".

Solution #4

Keep things how they are now, there is nothing wrong with our current society laid upon by our founding fathers.

Vote in the poll which solution you like best and discuss in this topic further ideas for a reform.

Furthermore, everyone seems to like the idea about different tiers of achievements.

> We must colonize Training Lobby for the good of the American Competitive Nation. We will stock our boats and sail westward where they speak in tongues and do not even understand how to properly 'scumhunt.' We will teach them our ways and make life better for all, working together as one group. Join me, in my great voyage, and we will make EpicMafia a better place to live.

Which solution do you think will save EM?

Giving tokens out might not be profitable, but if only the round winners, or the top 5 get tokens, then it really isn't hurting him that much either.

You're also right in the sense that it is still a temporary fix because it will only boost the numbers from that round and afterwards will very slowly decay while the site keeps on growing, though. What we need is comp to grow and die as the site does and not be so independent.

Comp lobby numbers aren't that low, they're just not growing like they should and training is. Giving tokens regularly might not be profitable for lucid either.

It looks like it was Round 65

Which goes back to my point that it really isn't that people don't enjoy competitive games, but that the division/war between training and competitive makes them shy away from it

you're right

No, in a specific round where tokens were offered the comp player base tripled. Looking at the rounds it might have been 60 something

I doubt it's a coincidence that since that round it's been steady 800-1000 when before it was 300

That is false, Zlake. It used to be 300 players in comp

the tokens are not the reason there are more people in comp. there are more people on the site in general than there were 4 years ago, so obviously comp has grown.

training lobby competition was a good start to a merge and its sad people had to constantly take advantage that mods weren't watching and cheat every round.

Honestly there are just as many rude people in training judging from the reports I've read, if not even more, so I don't know where the stigma that we're all rude came from

Hmm... Okay.

Have you considered an offer like giving people 10 free tokens on their first completion of a competition? Let's say, first time they score over 750 points in a competition in the Competitive Lobby.

or do like the past and offer tokens for anyone who wins a trophy

This would be too intimidating. New players would feel as though they'll never win a trophy as they would idolise the current competitive players in their own way. It's quite unsettling to come in to a new environment, where a player base is already established. Having a more manageable goal would be far more welcoming, whilst still giving them something to aim for.

However the tokens is really a temporary fix because even though competitive players usually stick to playing competitive until they leave the site, the influx of players always will come from training and we are back to the "war between lobbies" attitude
over 10 years
token incentives just boost numbers for one round and don't result in any long term players
over 10 years
Before the lobby split, it was one ranked game in a hundred competitive games. The move away from competitive games was caused by the lobby split creating a "war" between communities where the training people all look down on competitive players for whatever reason, usually them being rude (in fact people can be rude anywhere), and since new players have to go through training, it is that attitude that they are exposed to and learn.

If you delete competitive and add back the competition (which training was somehow completely okay with) it will solve a lot of problems.

Giving out tokens to the winners in a single round literally tripled the competitive player base immediately and this continued to further rounds and up till now. Why? Because once people try out competitive lobby for a while they usually learn it can be quite fun, and there's no need to be so completely loyal to one lobby (you can still play in training after all!).

Not if enough training players join competitive lobby. If enough join, they'll be able to play their own games and eventually integrate with the competitive crowd.

Simple point is that training lobby players have no desire to play at comp because everyone's far too emotionally invested. People are too rude when others are incorrect in their judgement. You can make all of the changes that you want, the player base will continue to drive new-comers away.

It's also the reason why I've been saying "delete competitive" rather than "merge", even though they are essentially the same thing
