Quote of the Week:
If we don't believe in freedom of expression for people we despise, we don't believe in it at all. -Noam Chomsky
Decided I wanted something new for my Bio and so from now on I'll be posting a meaningful quote once a week here. The quote will always have something to do with something that happened to me last week: It could be in reaction to a political debate I engaged in, be from a movie/show I watched over the week or something else: it might even be from a game of epic mafia. Each week I'll post an explanation as to why I chose to quote below it. I'm starting with my favourite Noam Chomsky quote partially because I've used it three times in the last week, partially because my poli-sci prof last year was obsessed with chomsky and partially because of how quotable Chomsky is, making him a decent enough choice to kick this off.
Last week I found myself in a number of debates regarding free speech (The topic first rose up while I was in a discussion regarding hate speech, the second was a response to a comment made on a video about the US civil war and once in a discussion with an atheist about Christianity). With this being one of the quotes that best describes my views on the subject; I've decided to use it as the quote this week.
Since I'm quoting Chomsky, people may assume I'm an Anarcho-Syndicalist, which I am not. In fact it’s one of my least favourite political ideologies as I disagree with many its principles and my dealings with Anarcho-capitalists has greatly lowered my general opinion of all forms of anarchy (not that I have treated it highly). So, while I disagree with Chomsky on most political issues, I do respect the man and his contributions to philosophy, and so I'm not afraid to quote him.
Feel free to message me reactions to the quote or if you have any particular quote you think I might like and I’ll post it at the relevant time.
