Mental Health Discussion57

Considering that the Mental Illness Support thread (https://epicmafia.com/topic/89373) is now clogged with debates around effective treatments and definitions for mental disorders, I think it's best that we migrate the discussion here.

ALSO, if you do end of needing medication, your counselor/psychologist can refer you to a psychiatrist to get those meds.

the tl;dr is: my negative self image has to do with defining myself in relation to others / how others view me. i don't know if that's how it is for EVERYONE, but that's what i've learned about myself
youve come so far from when we were kids and i am so very extremely proud of you
love you so much Nicole this mightve made my day

maybe provide a thread link on health resources and some inspiring messages to say "hey everyone experiences these problems one way or another" BUT DON'T LEAVE THESE THREADS OPEN FOR FU/CK'S SAKE

banshee are you saying people shouldn’t discuss medication, an empirically validated form of psychiatric treatment?

I am probably going to major in Psych for my undergrad and am currently learning specifically about mental illnesses and treatments so if you come up to me asking what you should do if you're depressed I'll just laugh and say "me too"

The cause of depression and the like is unknown, although if you look across the world it appears where you live and the culture you are born into has a great impact.

Six out of the seven lowest suicide rates in the world are in the Caribbean, with Jamaica being the lowest at 2.0/100,000. Lesotho, a similar sized population to Jamaica has a suicide rate of 28.9/100,000. This massive difference is only explainable by culture and location. How you live and where you live matters is the summary. You can control that, try and fix this first and if it fails then resort to other methods like medicine.

Mods need to delete comments that are offering medical advice as if they are professionals/doctors. Quick way to get Lucid sued otherwise.

By the way, I think it's important to mention that general physicians aren't trained to practice mental health, but they can still prescribe medications as if they are. Expressing concerns over depression, for example, will most likely lead to an immediate prescription of an antidepressant.
This is 1. Generalized and 2. Wrong.

I don't think someone would have a strong case in court with "I read this online in a forum where you play the hit party game mafia"
