Cult Expansion

Lucid told me that he's going to start rolling out updates again. One of the things you guys may have seen is PosterChild's updated role icons (clear your cookies/cache if you don't see them.)

Something I want to convince Lucid of adding is a full on Cult faction, spinning them off from the third party category.

The Village is an unknown majority faction that wins by eliminating all Hostiles. The Mafia is a known minority that wins by eliminating non-Mafia until their number is greater than or equal to the non-Mafia. The Cult is a known minority that wins by converting non-Cult until their number is greater than or equal to the non-Cult.

The basic idea starts with splitting the Cultist role into Cultist and Cult Leader; Cultist is basically a third-party Templar (all Cultists share a meeting at night,) and when the Cult Leader is present, the Cult meeting gains a conversion meeting and has the usual "if the cult leader dies the cultists die" clause. Cthulhu remains unchanged. There would be new roles added to expand the powers of Cult; not alignment-swapped roles, actual new roles.

We also have briefly talked about rolling the Zombie and the Cyborg into an expanded Cult role in order to nerf them since a lot of people think they're overpowered, but the ideas for these are more hazy.

Are there any objections, comments, or suggestions anyone wants to leave here? Is this a good idea? If Cult becomes its own faction, should its color be green or purple?

Right now, cthulhu has no place in the majority of games because its chances of winning are so conditional. The majority of the time, cthulhu players just try to die because they know they cant win, so they might as well troll.

He has no Agency.
His win condition is based on another faction that, in a lot of closed role setups, never shows.
He's remarkably easy to out if discovered.

All things considered, he's terrible. The only thing he adds is a unique insanity mechanic. He can be viable without taking away the things that make him beloved.

I've made countless suggestions to fix him since lucid butchered my original version of the role, and none of them have been taken. Honestly at this point they might as well make cthulhu town because he's a nonlethal granny who cant win and nothing more.

I tested it and I'm pretty sure Cthulhu is already immune, but that second part is fine.


i was always convinced, from a thematic perspective, that there would never be any coordination of any kind between a capricious superdeity and its mortal followers. the fact that they're somewhat independent but have a mutual win condition is appropriate.


I never said cthulhu knows who the cultists are, but cultists tend to know the object of their devotion.

If you were a cultist dedicated to an almighty being of power, and it was in the same town hall meeting as you and you couldn't recognize it, you're bad at your supposed calling.


i get that, but if we introduce that condition than there's nothing precluding the rest of town from being able to pick up on it as well. cthulhu is beloved for its opacity. i'd like to make it clear that nothing about what i'm proposing is rational w/r/t gameplay. i'm totally being a stickler for source material and context.

i don't think getting an avatar should be mandatory, but i think that when you first get an account your should either have a basics tutorial that ends in the settings page or the lobby but at least shows you how to get to your settings and how to upload an avatar

and have the script that allows typing the role into the chat be hoverable be more consistent (some only work if you put the before the role and idek how to get crier to work)

Also make getting an avatar mandatory when u join the site.

Having cult as its own faction is cool but yeah way too many elements I think are being left behind. The new Graveyward "faction" hasn't really integrated itself either. Maybe just warn the players to stay in the gy if there's something that can interact with them (ress/necro/medium/crank) rather than have them stay and turns out the gy role is ghost and doesn't have anything to do with them lel.

What sl0nd said. If cult is eventually made into its own faction, I think the first new cult roles should be based in protecting the leader. For example, one that dies in place of the leader, like angel.

don't get me wrong i'm a big supporter of cult becoming its own faction because it opens up a lot of new design space but the fact remains that this site is built on JS taped together over the years.

yep. i think every online game does this (adds more and more new stuff) and eventually looks back and realizes that the old stuff is in decay. we need to finish what's on our plate before we got up for seconds (though it's more like fourths at this point).

Yeah that's probably correct. New improvements are coming soon, more vocab for game stuff (thanks Shayne) and possible redesigns to make the website prettier.
