Scott's Song Selection Challenge

over 6 years

Okay this is less of a "game" more than it is a bit of a fun thing to get people trying some different music.

The premise is once a week, probably around Thursday or Friday I'll PM people somewhere between 3-5 songs and they vote for their favourite. Then at the end, I'll reveal the songs and results in this thread.

If you'd like to participate, PM me and I'll give you my Skype, as that's the easier medium for this. On Monday I'll have results for this week, I have a few people starting now.

Current judges are in game mode on the side!

And in first place this week with 4 votes is this song.

It's funny because I don't think this song was the most well received overall, most people liked it just about equally I think. It was described as a bit of a Lana Del Rey imitation. It was voted for primarily by people who weren't big fans of the rest of the playlist and thus it was the best song by default. I think everyone agrees it's still a pretty good song.

"Champagne Room" by Sizzy Rocket

Second place with 3 votes is this song.

This might have been the song I voted for if I only listened to each of these once. It's really haunting and grabs your attention immediately with the unexpected steps and dissonant melody.

"Planets and Stars" by Pavvla

The next song is my personal favourite that I've posted in any of the three weeks. It also got 2 votes.

For the most part people who did this poll loved the Neighbourhood but weren't really sold on this song. I was the opposite, I'm not really sold on The Neighbourhood overall but this song is genius.

I think if you asked me why overall I prefer bands to individual singers, I'd point to the last minute of this song - the voice is only one instrument, even if it is the most powerful one. But if you can combine it in a perfect mixture of percussion, melodic, and harmonic instruments then you've got a much deeper and unique blend than anything a voice can do alone.

"$ting" by The Neighbourhood

The next song, also with 2 votes, is a cover, the first one I've had in these challenges.

For this one the people who loved it, really loved it, though in general the review was that the song was fantastic but they weren't sold on this guys voice.

"Neptune" by Sleeping at Last, cover by Rusty Clanton

We had 13 judges this time, which is a good number! Unfortunately they were very split on the result.

We had 3 songs tie for 3rd place with 2 votes-
The first was probably the last song I put on the list, but there's definitely some things I like about it. I think it's very much above average alt rock and the people who liked it really liked it.

"Home" by The Jungle Giants

One more day left if you want to be a song judge!

PM me tomorrow if you want in!

I'm back again with 5 more songs! PM me preferably on Skype, but EM is fine, if you want to be a judge!

And I've also got an honorable mention for this week just for fun.

I never did contact people to bug them to play so we're a little bit low on judges this week.

In 4th place, with 0 votes, once again my favourite song of the bunch got no votes:

"Ville Mentality" by J Cole

Okay I've chosen the songs for this week! Please PM me if you want to play - I'll contact some of last week's people tomorrow.

Cleared out the game mode as new songs will be selected by tomorrow and another round started!

It's gonna be a lot different in terms of types of songs this time.

I've added to Game Mode the songs each of the judges voted for. I'll be back Thursday for another round with new songs and I'll clear all the judges, so if you want to play next round there will be that opportunity!

In First Place with 9 votes and over 50% of the total,

"Sans Soleil" by Miike Snow

This one was really popular among the voters, and I do think it's a really good song and I say that as someone who doesn't even really like Miike Snow's most popular song "Genghis Khan".

In Second Place, with 4 votes:

"Dreams So Real" by Metric

This one everyone was either like "nah man" or they loved it and said they wanted to add it to a playlist.

I'm actually surprised how little known Metric is in the states, all the Canadians who did this challenge were like "Oh yeah, Metric, big name band"

In Third Place, with 2 votes

"So Glad To See You" by Hot Chip

I kind of knew this wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea but surprisingly it wasn't even the most divisive song on the list.

Okay here are the results of the song poll:

In fourth place of the four songs, with zero votes-
"I Think Ur A Contra" by Vampire Weekend

This actually makes me sad because it's probably my favourite song of the 4 - I think the way they're able to ground the airy falsetto vocals with the steady beat really makes the song.

I'll post the results Monday, so deadline to contact me to get the songs will be Sunday night.
